Family practice: 12 inches isn't very far. We're you standing up or sitting. It could be fractured although you are able to walk on it. It it doesn't bother that much give it a week to see how it does. The only way to know for for sure is by xray.

Unlikely: Unlikely due to your symptoms but you may have a stress fracture or a bone contusion. If pain and swelling have gone down and able to ambulate without issues, then it is unlikely you need to worry about it. If you are concerned, just set up an appointment for a standing x-ray of the foot. Hope this helps!

Some basics: A true fracture will usually lead to some bleeding reflected by a bruise or bruises. These often are seen affected by gravity under the foot or below the point of injury. The nerves that cause pain are located on the outside surface of bone so a scuff from trauma can have significant pain. Walking without pain would suggest no significant injury.
