Hard to say but...: The ticks in your area do have a good chance of carrying not only the lyme bacteria but babesia, bartonella, ehrlichiosis etc. However, a tick isn't likely to spread any infection unless it's on you for many hours. After being outdoors you should be checked carefully for ticks; if they are removed promptly the risk is minimal. They can be tiny. Don't be afraid to go on walks, just be cautious.

Risky: There are a lot of infected ticks in the hamptons. Dogs than run trough fields can collect ticks and pass them on to you. See my response on lyme prevention for ways to protect yourself.
