In my opinion: Patients will get the best treatment when they see both a qualified, experienced & caring general dentist and periodontist who have the same philosophies and who work together as a team. In those cases they cross refer to each for the benefit of the patient and for the best final result. It's important to consult with both first and then they will plan out the treatment for you. Gp first usually.

Foundation: Think of your gums and bone as the foundation and crowns and fillings as the building. Take care of the foundation first. See the periodontist first.

Periodontist: The gingeva and alveolar bone, and their health, form the foundation of teeth. Think of them like the foundation of a building. The crown is the structure itself. A crown should not be placed until the gums and bone support are healthy!

General Dentist: I always say a good general dentist is like a conductor in an orchestra. Each musician knows their instrument perfectly but the general dentist brings them all together to make beautiful music. As general dentists we look at the big picture and guide the patients to help them complete their entire mouth in the proper sequence.

It is a team work: Before doing any crowns on any teeth you would want to make sure that you have a good foundation, so periodontal health should be considered first before any crown work. If there are active caries in the teeth that need to be crowned or if there are broken teeth that create food traps composite build ups should be done at your general dentist as you don't want to run into complications.

Teamwork. The General Dentist quarterbacks the team. He/She will help you find Periodontist/Orthodontist/Endodontist/Oral Surgeon/etc. Generally the approach is to create o sound foundation on which to build a superstructure for greatest longevity of finished case. Seek quality care, avoid short-cuts.
