What are the ways that exercise machines calculate the amount of calories burned?

By a formula: Typically you would punch in your gender and age at the beginning. Depending on the type of exercise, there is estimates for the amount of calories burned per minute- for example, it may be that a certain treadmill reports that at a 4% incline at 4.5mph for a 38 year old male may burn 7 calories per minute (as an example only)
this is all estimated; individual results will vary.
