Strong: Implants are strong and stretch when pressured. They break after wearing out over time. Contracture may increase the folding and risk of leak.

Strong when new: New implants are very durable. There's a video on youtube of a surgeon driving over a gel implant with his car - and the implant doesn't leak. However, as the implant gets older (10+ years), the shell becomes more brittle, and it eventually will leak, and need to be replaced.

Remarkably strong: But any material has its breaking poi t and if subjected to excessive or repeated forces maybe subject to tear. For example. To demonstrate how strong they are, i will commonly stand on a new implant and i weight 170 lbs. New implants will not break as long I do not have a sharp object on my shoe. However the most common cause for breakage is related to repeated crease fold failure.

Durable: They are designed to be durable and withstand normal compression and the general life of a patient. They are not perminant devices and are not indistructable. Having said that, they have been studied extensively, and are fda approved. Please ask your board certified plastic surgeon all of your questions.
