Depends: It depends on if your provider is comfortable treating this disease. A good test is to see if your provider knows the latest research regarding vitamin E (should help). If you are moving towards cirrhosis, see a gastroenterologist.

Yes: Some medical centers are doing studies using diabetes medications in nondiabetics to improve fatty liver, which can progress if untreated to cirrhosis of te liver.

Get a work up : You do not necessarily need a second opinion. What you need is a work up to determine the cause of the fatty liver. If your doctor cannot determine the cause, then you should seek a second opinion. Causes include alcohol, medications, viral infections, autoimmune disorders, and metabolic abnormalities.

Perhaps: Fatty liver is an emerging epidemic of liver disease mirroring obesity epidemic in the US. Fatty liver has a large spectrum from benign fat deposition (steatosis) fat with inflammation (steatohepatitis) which eventually results in cirrhosis. Life style and dietary modification is the current treatment of choice. Vitamin E is beneficial only in patients with steatohepatitis.
