A member asked:

Is it possible to have type 1 diabetes if your parent has type 2?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Type 2 diabetes is so common these days that there are more and more families in which someone with a family history of type 2 diabetes ends up diagnosed with type 1 themselves. Nothing about a family history of type 2 diabetes protects you from developing an autoimmune condition like type 1. And to complicate things, the distinction between type 1 and 2 is not always clearcut.
