A member asked:

Is there a chance of getting a diabetes if one of my parents has one?

Yes: Type 2 diabetes, or adult onset diabetes, is for most an inherited disease. If one parent has it, you have about a 50% chance of having the gene. If you exercise and keep your weight down, however, you may never actually become diabetic. If your parent has the rarer type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile onset, the inheritance is more complex.

Possibly: A family history of type 2 diabetes does put you at risk of developing it, too. The tendency of type 1 to be passed along is not as strong.

Lots u can do: Although you might be at higher risk of developing diabetes bc of family history, it doesn't mean you can't do lots to reduce your risk- stay physically active (150 min/week), eat a nutritious, balanced diet, and keep a healthy bmi.
