What does a cold-compress (for a sprained ankle or other swelling) do for you exactly?

Stop swelling: The cold compress is applied to the twisted ankle because the cold induces blood vessel constriction in the area. By reducing the blood flow to the area, swelling is decreased, less white blood cells come to the area to release inflammatory causing molecules as well. This is felt to ease the recovery of the twisted ankle.
