P.R.I.C.E.: After an acute ankle sprain the rule is price. Protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation. This will help to reduce the swelling, but you have to be proactive and consistent. Stay off the ankle, and reduce activity which causes the ligaments to 'stretch' out. You want to protect the structures, and keep the ice on through the first week. Physical therapy can help a great deal as well.

Have it evaluated.: R.I.C.E. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. Immobilization with a splint or brace may be of benefit in the initial phase of recovery. Oral anti-inflammatory medication may help with the pain and swelling. Once improved, mobilization and physical therapy can help restore strength and function. Healing times may vary. Have it evaluated and get the appropriate treatment.
