What caused cramping: Did the doctor told you what is causing the cramping? Do you get cramping when you exercise or all the time? If during exercise then you have to replace your electrolytes. Drink gatorate and see if that helps.

Don't be sad: But you do need to figure out why you are getting the cramps. Vitamin deficiency? Overuse? Dehydration? Potassium deficiency? Side effect of medication like cholesterol, lowering medicine? Make sure you don't have a clot in the leg....

It depends: It depends on what the problem is. If it is a muscle strain, often several days of rest is sufficient, but if it is an injury to a tendon, a tear in a muscle, or other more serious injury, it might need physical therapy or other treatment. If your doctor has cleared you to start back, make sure you build up gradually and stretch your muscles well after exercise.
