A member asked:

Why do some plastic surgeons offer high volume liposuction, for weight reduction, while others say its not for weight reduction, why the discrepancy?

Liposuction: Liposuction is designed to decrease localized deposits of undesired adipose (fatty) tissue. No more than 1.5 kg of fat can be taken safely at one liposuction session. After that the risk of complications rises. That is approximately 3.5 lbs. Not a good way to reduce weight.

Indications: All plastic surgeons know that liposuction is not effective for weight control. If a patient has that attitude they will quickly regain the weight in unsightly areas like ankles, forearms, face and necks, etc. After surgery. High volume liposuction can dramatically decrease Insulin requirements for diabetics. Patient education is important to maximize long term benefits.

Not for weight loss: Liposuction is a contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure. But some doctors out there do market to the "quick fix mentality... I don't agree with that. Here in florida, we're actually limited by law to 4 liters of fat removal as a maximum, in an outpatient setting.

Knowledge: I doubt that board certified plastic surgeons are offering liposuction surgery for “weight reduction”. I would guess that doctors who are offering this procedure for weight loss purposes are not board-certified plastic surgeons; in these situations, you may be dealing with a lack of knowledge and/or ethics. Best wishes.
