I've seen 2 conflicting tiptaps. one claimed tooth whitening does not damage teeth, and the other said it does. what is the general consensus?

Teeth whitening: It depends how often, how to apply and how intense of the teeth whitening procedure and as well as your own body. Under normal circumstances, the teeth whitening side effect is minimal under dentist's supervision. Any overdoing behavior is no good anyway.

Generally no damage: Too much of anything is no good. Used as directed and in moderation, there should be no long term damage to the enamel or your gums. Too much use can dessicate your teeth and burn the gingival tissues.

Depends on scenerio: Tooth whitening in a clinical setting supervised by a dentist would not result in damage of your dentition. Only side effect may occur, which is sensitive teeth and is reversible. However otc whitening products may cause tooth damage as some products which be very abrasive and hence over wear your teeth. Ask you dentist which otc tooth whitening products are safe.

Tooth whitening : Assuming that all your teeth and gums are basically healthy, tooth whitening will not damage your teeth. That also assumes either home whitening methods and\or tooth whitening under the supervision of a dentist is not carried to extremes. I think the vast majority of dentists will agree with me on this point.

Safe & Effective: According to the american dental association, both otc and professional whitening are safe and effective. The ada recommends a dental consult before hand to avoid problems. The ada also recognizes that whitening can cause gum sensitivity, which usually goes away when treatment ends. Problems can arise when individuals abuse whitening products. Heeding the recommendation of a dentist is recommended.

Normally OK: Follow instructions and beware of online or over-the-counter scams that may seem too good to be true, yet can create some issues. I would consider whitening through a dental office, with certified product and proper instructions and supervision.
