Why a surgeon choosing to suture the bucket handle tear meniscus for the knee instead of removing it ?

Meniscus: Bucket handle tears are large tears of the meniscus. At your age it would be best to try to keep as much cartilage as possible. Removing the meniscus certainly would be easier but would leave you with less padding. Bucket handle tears have the capacity to mend due to the blood supply.

Repair vs. excise: The meniscus is involved in distributing the forces throughout the knee. Repairing the meniscus allows the knee to re-establish its normal function of force distribution. If it is excised, the forces are localized to a small surface area and articular cartilage begins to wear away leading to early post-traumatic arthritis.
