A little while only: He shouldn't be swaddled when he gets more wiggly. Make sure his legs are loose. Tight wrapping can increase risk of hip problems.

Swaddling: If your baby is colicky you can swaddle him until he is three months of age when colic usually ceases.

Weeks ago: Swaddling is a reasonable temporary measure right after birth.Newborns are comforted by tight surroundings and startled by their own loose random movements.(which were not possible in the womb).As soon as baby will settle without it, get rid of the blanket. We loose about 100 babies a year to suffocation in blankets or up against bumpers or soft toys.
