Back pain workup: Xray will not show nerve, MRI might be indicated. Back pain can alos be referred from internal organs like kidneys.

Need specialist: An x-ray will really only show gross findings and will not show any disc herniations. You probably should see someone who specializes in back pain such as a physical medicine/ rehabilitation doctor or a pain specialist. A careful exam will help direct if further studies such as an MRI may be needed.
