Muscle tumors: Would be best imaged with an MRI. You doctor is right, regular XRs are usually to look at bone, although they may pick up swelling in soft tissue. All the best.

Helpful: If a tumor is palpated in the leg, frequently a routine x ray will provide some dimentions and whether bone is compromised. An MRI will give far more detail an the nature of the tumor composition and extent of the growth pattern. When I find a large lesion, probably sarcoma, I have an angiogram performed and if tumor very vascular, prior to surgery, tumor vessels are embolized.
