Thick nails: The most common cause of thickness can be trauma - either overt or repetitive - or from fungus infection. See a podiatrist for a definitive answer. Good luck !

Fungus: The small toe nails due to there position on the foot are much more proneto trauma and can develope fungus easier then other toes on most people, see your foot doc to be sure.
