A member asked:

Ive had this thick black toenail for about 17 years now and it doesnt hurt. supposedly my mom says it comes from shoes i wore that were too small when i was younger. are there any treatments for it to make look normal?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

This may be treatabl: If it is from your shoes it is probably onychodystrophy, which is trauma to the nail. This is not curable but you can treat it cosmetically by using a softening agent and filing the nail thinner. If you have a fungal infection of the nail which is called onychomycosis, it is treatable. A fungal test of the nail is needed.
