Nailing it: Thickened awful looking nails are usually caused by trauma or infection. Other causes are possible but lets stick with the most probable. If the thickened nails are caused by trauma, then surgical removal is more than likely your only option. If caused by infection then the answer could be surgery, pills, topical and even laser. You best bet is to see a professional who treats nail conditions.

Fungus and air: Sometimes you can get separation of the nail plate from the nail bed allowing air to get under the nail that can cause the white line. Also may have fungus infection of the nails that will cause the nail to become yellow brown discoloration and the nail to become thicker
