Get accurate advice: I'm glad you are taking up lifting / resistance training. You do not have to drink "protein shakes" or take any other magic food. Whoever told you otherwise is trying to sell you something that you don't need. You can supplement with cheap whey protein, or even better, enjoy some lean protein food especially after your workout & do cardio as well. Your personal physician can be a guide here.

Proper protein: Eat carefully. Egg white is superior to all. Quinoa is excellent. Beans and lentils are excellent. Milk protein is excellent. Whole grains are good but not sufficient. Nuts are excellent. Yogurt is excellent. Have fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid bread, pasta, sugar, desserts.
