Usually Acute: Almost all dvts present as acute problem . With time they will progress to chronic DVT which may present as swelling in the legs , discoloration and ulcers . This chronic phase can last forever.

Usually acute: While there are afew conditions that allow clot gradually buildup on narrowed veins, most are acute post trauma, surgery, cancer, birth control, and coagulopathies. Once found and treated it takes some months to become stable.
