A 35-year-old member asked:

what is a good treatment or remedy for dry scalp?

Flaky itchy scalp: Most likely this is related to seborrheic dermatitis and one of the dandruff shampoos may help. There are a number of them with different active ingredients so you may have to try several different ones to see what is best for you. Some are: neutragena tgel, tsal; sebulex, head and shoulders, etc. Shampoo daily. If it doesn't work see your dermatologist for medication to put on your scalp.

Seborrheic derm.: A scaling scalp is commonly due to a condition known as seborrheic dermatitis. An effective over the counter treatment is to use selsun blue shampoo, lathering it in and letting it stay in for 5 minutes before rinsing. This should be done 2-4 times per week, depending upon severity. I also recommend to my patients to dry their hair and not just let it air dry. See your doctor if no improvement.

Can a frontal scalp/muscular headache cause disconnected or foggy feelings?

Dr. Edward Smith

Pain is a drain: Any pain, if strong enough, can cause disconnected, foggy feelings. At least part of the reason is the release of neurohormones in response to pain which have negative effects on cognition and emotion. Of course this answer assumes that you don't have a serious spinal or brain or head disorder.

How can I get help for a dry scalp?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Jerome Litt

DRY SCALP: Does your dry scalp itch? How long have you had it? How often do you shampoo? Shampooing on a daily basis with a tar shampoo like t-gel or tarsum shampoo can often relieve the problem. If it itches, that's another problem. Dos anyone in your family have psoriasis? Do see a dermatologist if it is still dry after using the above shampoos.
