Dr. Rosch, I totally concur with your advice to eat a balanced diet & get adequate rest and exercise. However, studies by the USDA show that the MAJORITY (yes, majority!) of Americans do not get the daily recommended intake of folate, magnesium, Vitamin A, D & E and Calcium and over 1/3 do not get adequate Vitamin C, B6 and Zinc. Over 20% do not get enough B1, B2, B3, B12 and Copper. ALL of these nutrients (except perhaps calcium) are proven necessary for proper immune function. Given the high prevalence of nutrient deficiencies I believe it is prudent for everyone to take a multivitamin to provide insurance that they are at least getting the bare minimum of essential nutrients. Of course I also urge everyone to get as much nutrition from their diet as possible and taking supplements is never a substitute for a healthy diet. However, the sad fact is that the vast majority of Americans are NOT getting all the nutrients they need from their diet (only 14.1 % get adequate E & only 24.9 % get adequate folate).
