Basically!: The low carb/glycemic index diet diminishes the secretion of insulin. Without high Insulin levels, fat cannot be put in a fat cell. When Insulin levels are low, you burn more fat. Therefore, avoiding sugars and starches does just that! in metabolic syndrome, the number one cause of cv death, Insulin resistance is the culprit with high levels which are toxic!

Him or the diet?: The diet is bunk. Few studies show that mathematics isn't valid (more calories in, you gain; more calories out, you lose). If you eat carbs, you can't mobilize energy out with starvation and you go hypoglycemic and die? No. If you eat tons of pure fat, it gets burned straight to energy and you turn into flame? No. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0692496157/

Biggest loser.: If you are prepared to follow a very disciplined regimen, then the Atkins may just be the one for you. Sustaining a moderately low amount of carbohydrates can often times be difficult. Although sustaining the restriction is challenging, the payoff can be tremendous. It would be best to seek the aid of an Adkins advocate.
