Avoid Atkins: Don't use any diet with a name on it. Just learn how to eat less of a well balanced food intake and exercise more. See a good registered dietitian. Programs like weight watchers can offer good support.

At the beginning.: You should first read up on the principles of the diet. Finding a physician that is well versed on the program would be a tremendous benefit. Evaluate you present diet regimen and see how it compares with Atkin's. Whether or not you buy the product or start evaluating food labels and carbohydrate charts is up to you.
