A member asked:

Why does my endocrinologist say that tpo and tgab thyroid antibody markers are usually only used in patients that had cancer & thyroid removed to detect reoccurring cancer? why can't these values detect thyroid cancer initially?

TPO and TGAB tests measure antibodies produced by your immune system against proteins that are made (and released into the blood) by either normal thyroid cells or thyroid cancer cells. Once your normal thyroid cells are gone, any rise in TPO or TGAB would suggest recurring cancer.
