A member asked:

My doctor took me off of nifedipine due to swelling but now i am learning that the labetalol causes it as well. i was taking both. now i am on a fluid pill, labetalol and the generic of benicar. also why should i get labs done often?

As a followup to my previous answer, diuretics can cause low potassium, high uric acid, worsen diabetes and have an effect on kidney function. Benicar,an angiotensin receptor blocker, can raise serum potassium and affect kidney function. I recommend checking electrolytes, uric acid, glucose,BUN& creatinine after 2 weeks and, if OK, every 3 months thereafter.
