Proteus mirabilis is usually sensitive to most common antibiotics used for gram negative bacteria, such as quinolone or cephalosporine second or third generation, etc. and IV meropenem may be not necessary. The antibiogram should be the final guidance after the empiric treatment and route of antibiotic depends on the severity of your foot wound. Good luck.

Treatment decisions for foot ulcers depend depend less on the particular bacteria from the wound than on extent of inflammation, underlying problems like bone involvement, diabetes, and blood flow. An internal specimen (e.g. from bone biopsy) sometimes is helpful. Depending on these issues, oral antibiotics might be fine with no need for IV antibiotics. Discuss w/ your doctors.

When treating diabetic wounds, sometime IV and oral route of antibiotic is as important if not more important using a topical antibiotic. When circulation compromised as in a diabetic with small vessels disease

You should follow thw advice of your doc who is treating you and not decide what treatment you want as he/she is most competent in treating you, knowing your history and your problem. I think you will be fine with approp. treatment. Good luck
