If ovulation occurred this menstrual cycle, and a remaining "dominant follicle" is seen on ultrasound, a prior follicle can rupture ( as it may have been the "true" dominant follicle) , releasing follicular fluid detected as "free fluid" in the lowest portion of the peritoneal cavity (i.e., cul-de-sac).
