A member asked:

Very good afternoon doctors my cytology report says negative for urothelial carcinoma. separate sentence urothelial cells and squamous cells are present. why did the laboratory pathologist indicate that there were urothelial cells and squamous cells?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

All body surfaces including the inside of the bladder/urinary collecting system will shed older cells. They are replaced naturally over time. The reporting confirms that the sample came from the proper source and indicates all findings are normal. This is what the doctor wants to see in a report. S/he wouldn't want to see digestive tract cells in a test of the urinary tract.
