PPI can cause both acute and chronic kidney disease. The acute injury is in the category of allergic reaction, called acute interstitial nephritis and it may happen weeks or months after the exposure. PPI-related chronic kidney disease occurs after a prolonged and continuous use of PPI (many years of exposure). The definite physiopathology of the PPI-related CKD is still not completely defined.
