Constipation: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) works very well. It is a tasteless powder that you can add to water or juice. It does not get thick like metamucil. I would start with one cap full (17.5 grams) in 8 ounces of juice or water. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is very safe in children. It can be used daily for an extended period of time. The daily dose for a three year old is about 1/2 cap full in 4 ounces of water.

Withholding: What you are describing is voluntarily holding in the stool because of fear. What needs to be addressed, therefore, is the fear. First, make the poo painless. The MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) suggested by dr. Mosolf is an excellent way to do that. Next, make the whole potty experience a pleasant one. Have her sit on the potty for five or ten minutes twice a day, doing something pleasant like looking at pictures or.

Withholding part 2: Playing with a toy. It's not important if she actually goes poo or not at first, only that she has a pleasant experience sitting there without pain or fear. Then, finally, when she does go, praise her....Sing, dance, clap, all to let her know how wonderful she is for what she just did. Then keep doing it again and again so that she is no longer afraid. Never scold, never be negative.

Soften stool: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) mixed in pear or prune juice or water. Soften stools. Schedule 3-4 potty breaks a day. Just have her sit there. When she goes in her diaper, make her take time out of her busy schedule to help with the cleanup, and let her see the stool go into the potty chair or toilet. If her stool is soft, she has the opportunity to go, and using the diaper is inconvenient, she'll figure it out!
