No, not necessarily. But someone with herpes zoster (shingles) involving the ear definitely should be on treatment with valacyclovir or acyclovir to reduce the chance of spread to the eye or other manifestations of Ramsay Hunt. Also be aware that herpes lesions of the ear could be herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) rather than shingles. (But the treatment is the same.)
