A member asked:

I had strep in sept. 2022, severe tonsillitis in october 2022, and strep again in february of 2023. would this be enough to recommend getting my tonsils removed?

Tonsil removal does not end strep throat infections. It can reduce the intensity of those that get severe infections, but there are nodular lymph glands throughout the upper airway & digestive tract that can continue to become infected after tonsil removal. This is a question for the doc who knows all the facts, & your insurance company that may deny the surgery if it doesn't meet their guidelines

Criteria for tonsillectomy include more than just a specific number of infections over a specific amount of time, it would be 3/year for 3 years or 5/year over 2 years for example. Seeing an ENT specialist would be best as criteria for tonsillectomy can still be met otherwise if for example a recurrent peritonsillar abscess is diagnosed.
