A course of antibiotics can treat diverticulitis but if you have recurrent and regular bouts of diverticulitis you will probably need to have surgery to remove the affected parts of the colon. This type of surgery is usually planned and well tolerated and can give you years of relief from recurrent diverticulitis.

Majority of diverticulitis flares do clear with antibiotics, however due to presence of diverticuli, they tend to recur. Severe cases need surgery.

Although there will still be diverticula present in the colon, antibiotics can rid the body of bouts of diverticulitis. If you have recurrent bouts of diverticulitis, surgery is possible to remove the most severely affected segments of the colon. Good luck.
