Thick mucous can stem from a variety of issues. The most common being dehydration. If the mucus is dark yellow or green, there could also be an infection present. Talk to your Dr for an in person examination and treatment. Increasing your non caffeinated fluid intake will help thin the mucus even if infected. You are at risk for more severe problems if this is not addressed.

You may be exposed to dust, and the mucous secretion is a reaction to the dust that has to be removed because it is foreign. You could increase fluid intake to increase ease of removal because the thickness is most likely due to inadequate fluid intake. It is however more important to reduce exposure to dust that may even be coming from your beddings, carpets or pets.
