It sounds like you are doing everything right. Keep you weight down, eat right, exercise and be sure fasting glucoses are low - no higher than 100+ and you could live a good long life. Life expectancy should not be reduced if you do these things.

Your life expectancy is not based on the diagnosis of Diabetes but more on how well controlled you manage variation in your blood sugars. The smoking cessation and other life style changes should be helpful as well as making sure the A1c remains about what it is most of the time.
