Ask a diabetologist: You may want to repeat your hemoglobin A1C , or to request a 2 hour oral glucose tolerance test after a 75 gms glucose load or to discuss your concerns about diabetes and pre-diabetes with your doctor. A consultation with a diabetes endocrinologist (or a center specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes) should provide the best answer to your questions.

Diabetes: a few years ago yes you would have been told you are diabetic, HgbA1c above 5.7. Now you are pre-diabetic. Not knowing enough about you, I think you don't need medication BUT you should start checking your blood sugars, adjust your diet, increase activity, and most likely lose weight. A primary care physician can get you started.
