A member asked:

Can constipation really cause that much of a problem long term? had recurrent utis and an ultrasound and ct scan of kidneys, bladder, etc. come back normal. said constipation caused three months of back and side pain and uti symptoms. second opinion?

Failure to evacuate fully during constipation can cause the lower intestines to widen/balloon out from the excess. Over time that stretch can weaken the circular muscles in the colon lining making them less powerful & eventually add to constipation. I have seen it take a year of daily therapy to have a chronically constipated person resume normal emptying with a normal sized colon.

Constipation can make one more prone to a UTI but does not cause it. Avoid constipation, drink water, empty your bladder when you get the urge and keep the genital area clean - to reduce chances of UTI
