A member asked:

Can anyone let me know how accurate is the guaiac test? i had one done and it was negative. 35 year old male afraid of having colon cancer?

A stool guiac test can be falsely negative if active bleeding is not present. There are blood tests that may be helpful, but the Gold Standard involves periodic rectal exams and colonoscopies. Get on a schedule and do these as recommended by your physician.

FIT test is better than guaiac test for screening for colon cancer. Guaiac test will be positive from bleeding anywhere from lips to anus, eating meat or foods with peroxidase. One negative FIT test is as good as three negative guaiac tests, if there is family history or early onset colon cancer, get a colonoscopy at an age 10 years younger than the age at diagnosis of colon cancer in the relative

sensitivity of the test is low but unless you have a family history of ca of colon at your age chances of it are extremely low
