What is a pinched nerve and its causes? one side of neck and shoulder. how do you know for sure you have it and how to rule it out?

Your very general question cannot be briefly answered here on this site. Specifically, if you have pain radiating from your neck into your shoulder and down your arm, there could be a ruptured disc compressing an exiting nerve root. If there is suspicion, MRI images could help confirmation.
