The HSV 1&2 are strains of a DNA virus well known for their ability to hibernate forever is some people and emerge transiently before their immune system with or without additional treatment will push them back into hibernation. The apparent reason is the immune system is not robust enough against these strains to keep them in hibernation or eliminate them permanently.

HSV antibodies do not prevent recurrence, however overtime most people have less outbreaks. Outbreaks and transmission are decreased by taking an antiviral like valacyclovir or acyclovir for suppression of out breaks and prevention of spreading.
