Chance of HIV transmission through that wound is extremely low but I am reluctant to say it is impossible. If you want to make sure, a negative HIV antigen/antibody test after 90 days should erase any concern. By UPTODATE: there are no confirmed cases of HIV transmission in HCP with skin abrasions, cuts, sores, or other breaches in skin integrity, but a theoretical risk is estimated at 1/1000.

Yes HIV is blood-borne and is passed thru blood usually. in the situation you describe the odds of contracting HIV are very low. Recommend testing through primary care physician or health department. they will also be able to give you specific advice regarding the time interval for testing, and if any medication is indicated post exposure to HIV.
