A member asked:

I have high bun and bun/creatinine ratio (normal creatinine). i also have high alt(sgpt). i understand the bun can come from high dietary protein, but what does the alt of 35 mean? should i reduce protein intake to lower bun?

Chance of low volume at the time of blood test as the cause of high BUN is higher than high protein intake. If you eat less than 1.5 gm/kg of protein a day, you do not need to cut down the protein intake unless proteinuria is present or you're born with one kidney. ALT is a liver enzyme and high number means possible liver injury. However, ALT of 35 is borderline, nothing to concern.

ALT 0f less than 40 is OK. Yes you should reduce protein if on a high protein diet. Eat a mormal healthy diet and repeat test in 2-3 months. Good luck
