Hi. my labwork shows hyperactive thyroid. 24 hour nuc med uptake scan showed significantly elevated uptake. there is a mass on my left lobe, complex cystic mass, that an area showed up as photopenic. can you explain what that entails?

Wows, likely you have 2 problems at the same time. You have hyperthyroidism which is confirmed by blood test and nuclear scan uptake. However, there is no uptake in the complex cystic mass (photopenic) so thyroid cancer has to be ruled out. You need thyroid biopsy to rule out cancer first. If cancer is present, both conditions can be treated with total thyroidectomy then hormone replacement.
