Are you sure you do not have a first degree burn from the heat pad? Asking somebody to look at your back to see if there is skin redness (erythema). If yes, you have first degree burn due to the heat pad. If the back skin is normal, only the area is swollen and tender, you should be evaluated by a doctor. Otherwise, low back pain is very common, taking tylenor or advil as needed for a couple days.

Never leave heat on your body for more than 20-30 minutes at a time and only apply it several times in 24 hours. Too much heat application creates tissue swelling. Have a physician examine you to determine the cause of your back symptoms.
