A member asked:

59 year old female with micro hematutia for 30 years. hx of interstitial cystis. have had cystoscopes & ultrasounds multiple times can the ic cause consistent hematutia (usually trace) for that long or is it possible to just be normal for me?

It is not 'normal' Microhematuria is defined as less than 3-4 rbc/ per high power field and can occur in Int. cystitis. Your Urologist will and should followup on that periodically. Good luck.

If you have sterile pyuria (more than 5 WBCs in the urine with negative urine culture) at the same time with confirmed microscopic hematuria (above 3-5 RBCs in the urine sediment) not just trace occult blood by dipstick method, interstitial cystitis could be the cause. Micrcoscopic hematuria without sterile pyuria could be due to some kidney conditions, mostly benign if no significant albuminuria.
