A member asked:

Would a modified barium swallow test show if there was damage to the upper esophageal sphincter? is it possible to damage your upper esophageal sphincter from swallowing too hard or improperly?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The upper esophageal sphincter is actually a muscular valve. A barium swallow study, directed by a speech therapist looks for dysfunction. The radiologist performing the fluoroscopic exam can detect reflux and pathology. . I had a patient who ruptured his esophagus trying to prevent vomiting up colonoscopy prep which he stated tasted like sea water. I don't think improper swallowing would damage
