A member asked:

I started valsartan 5 months ago but was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. how can my cardiologist know if i have essential hypertension or secondary hypertension to the apnea? my blood pressure is 107/70 with the med. thanks?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Some sleep apnea patients can reduce or stop hypertension meds after they are well into successful sleep apnea treatment. This should be done with the guidance of your physician and may be assisted if you self monitor at home during any trial off meds. A weaning to off every 3rd/every other may assist the process. If your BP elevates during any weaning period you likely need meds.
